Pixel art is a form of digital art created using software. Images are designed at the pixel level. It is a graphic aesthetic originating from 8- and 16-bit computers, as well as video game consoles. Creating pixel art characters or objects for video games is sometimes called "spriting." The term originated within the hobbyist community. The word likely comes from the term sprite. The story
Pixel art comes largely from the world of video games. Arcade games like Space Invaders (1978) and Pac-Man (1980) are particularly noteworthy. 8-bit consoles like the Nintendo Entertainment System (1983) and the Sega Master System (1985) are also notable.
The term Pixel Art was first coined by Adele Goldberg and Robert Flegal of the Xerox Research Center in Palo Alto in 1982. But the concept dates back about 11 years before that.
Some traditional art forms , such as thread embroidery (including cross-stitch) and some types of mosaic and beadwork, are very similar to pixel art . Because these production techniques construct images from small colored units, the technique is similar to the pixels of modern digital computing.
A Definition of Pixel Art
The characterization of this medium of expression is unreliable. But the majority of pixel artists agree that an image can be classified as pixel art when the artist manipulates the image by deliberately controlling the position of each pixel . Most pixel artists do not consider images that have had filters applied to them to give the image a pixel look to be authentic . This is because the pixels that make up the image are not consciously placed by the artist. They generally do not have much importance in relation to the overall image.
A common characteristic of pixel art is the low color depth of the image. Pixel art also mimics many of the traits found in older video game graphics, which are rendered by machines that can only produce a limited number of colors at a time. Furthermore, many pixel artists believe that in most cases, using a large number of colors, especially when they are very similar in value, is unnecessary and detracts from the overall cleanliness of the image, making it appear more cluttered. Many experienced pixel artists recommend not using more colors than necessary.
