Décor Meeting #18: By Anaïs, Designing a Student Studio

Rencontré Déco #18 : By Anaïs, aménager un studio d'étudiant - Aire

We met Anaïs. A young YouTuber, Anaïs lives in a small 11m² studio in Paris. Anaïs shares her tips for arranging her student studio. Between creativity, a cozy atmosphere, and bright colors, you will discover how she jazzes up her decoration.

Arranging a small Parisian studio

"The little things make the difference." Anaïs, 21 years old, now lives in a small studio in Paris. She left her large country house in Poitou-Charentes to settle in the capital. She now has to live alone in an 11 m² studio in Paris. Like many students, she is discovering a very different way of life.

When Anaïs moved into her 11m², she immediately wanted to arrange her student studio, even though she had little space to equip herself. "Decoration is really important to me," she says. When she moved into her studio, the only furniture was a sofa and a desk. She quickly noticed a reinforcement in the wall that was not being used. "You should know that I like to organize my makeup by category."

Creating a student studio layout project

Anaïs needed shelves to realize her idea. She then created a Photoshop project with several shelves to store her belongings. She sent the project to her landlord to propose her idea. Her landlord accepted the project. The next day, she installed all the shelves. "I also wanted to include a mirror next to the bathroom door." In my opinion, these are the small details that make the difference.

A decoration enthusiast

Since she was very young, Anaïs has been passionate about decoration. She enjoys watching room tours on YouTube. Pinterest is also a huge inspiration for her. "I used to play the piano when I was a child and had to stop lessons because I couldn’t watch the show D&CO."

Thanks to all these inspirations, she was able to define her style. She arranged her student studio to reflect herself based on what she had available. She consults IKEA magazines and trends on the Internet. "Everything inspires me." Then, she recommends making moodboards to organize inspirations and decide where to place each item.

"You should know that my favorite color is not pink. It’s blue." But pink brings warmth to her. When she arrived, the pink sofa was already there. So she had to start from that. Every detail matters to Anaïs. Indeed, even her hair straightener is pink. "In a small apartment, every object can add a decorative touch. Items are always visible. So it has to look nice."

Decoration affects her mood. The white walls bring spaciousness and light to the room. She knows that if the walls hadn’t been white, she wouldn’t have liked living in this apartment. Several solutions were planned. First, she could have asked her landlord to paint the walls. If refused, she could have used a canvas or a curtain wall to hide them. "There is always a solution."

Decoration evolves

Decoration evolves. The more time we spend in a room, the more we want to decorate it differently to feel as comfortable as possible. Anaïs recommends occasionally moving furniture around. This way, we can more easily make the space our own and try new things. It helps us feel "at home."

Anaïs added decorative elements that don’t clutter her interior. She bought the famous "By Anaïs" neon sign. She added photos. For her, she felt she was making the apartment her own by adding the shelves.

The presence of paintings, photos, and moodboards gives the impression of having changed the decoration. "That’s what I try to do every two years. It does me good." For example, she changes the sheets. These are small details that matter. It is also important to get fresh air. During lockdown, Anaïs followed a routine. She made her bed and created a workspace. She called her colleagues and family daily. "Just going out to get bread does us good."

Storage

It is also important that the apartment is constantly tidy. Storage spaces should be separated. Clothes not used during the season are stored up high. Those worn most often are hung on racks. To make the most of the space, it is recommended to have multifunctional items.

Anaïs has a hard time organizing the kitchen. She tries to follow Marie Kondo’s advice. "Every item has its place." She also draws inspiration from what she finds on Pinterest. It was actually while researching that she discovered Pegboards. "They’re quite trendy right now. They’re ideal for organizing your desk. And even the kitchen!" It’s a practical way to store items.
