Meeting with Popee: Eco-friendly Toilet Paper and Tissues

Rencontre avec Popee : Le papier toilette et les mouchoirs écoresponsables - Aire

With Aire, we offer wall decoration that respects the planet thanks to our Pegboards made of wood from sustainably managed forests . Thus, we respect our forests and biodiversity . Wood is very present in our interiors through our decoration and furniture, but did you know that your trips to the toilet and seasonal colds can be responsible for deforestation ?

Well yes, and these single-use papers have a considerable ecological impact. According to the WorldWatch Institute, 270,000 trees are cut down every day for paper production. In 2017, the NGO Greenpeace even accused the world leader in toilet paper, which owns a famous brand, of participating in the destruction of vital regions for the planet in the boreal forests of the Far North!

Popee and Aire

So what do we do?! Stop wiping our behinds and noses to live without toilet paper or tissues? No: we rather find a sustainable alternative , without radically disrupting our daily lives: Popee hygiene papers !

Single-use toilet paper and tissues that are therefore hygienic

Some will say, with perfectly valid arguments, that it’s better to avoid disposables and opt for a toilet bidet spray, toilet paper, or washable cotton tissues. This is debatable: besides the extra organization and mental load, the bidet spray and washing machine consume a lot of water. Also, washing hygienically requires running machines very regularly at high temperatures (at least 60 degrees Celsius). This is very energy-intensive.

Moreover, these two methods are strongly not recommended in households with young children, as if poorly managed, they can lead to bacterial growth within the family.

Popee - Made in France

Recycled paper that doesn’t cut down trees

The solution to leave our forests alone?! Recycled paper! Popee uses paper from office wastebaskets of French companies: old financial statements and various other documents! Once collected from companies, this recycled paper is sorted to keep only the least inked sheets, then cleaned to make pulp that meets Ecolabel standards.

The good news with Popee papers? Here, we’ll give it to you in a few numbers. One ton of recycled paper at Popee means:

  • 17 trees saved
  • 300 kg less CO2 in the atmosphere
  • 2 times less energy consumed
  • 20 times less water consumed
Popee - A commitment to quality

French paper and made in France

Toilet paper and tissues Popee products are made from French raw materials and are also 100% made in France! They are thus labeled Origine France Garantie. Their tissue box is even the only one on the market to have this label.

Popee does not just work with companies located in mainland France, but also carefully selects its industrial and logistics partners to ensure a sustainable production chain that respects the work of all those who contribute to the life of the company:

  • The printer is a small family business in the Cotentin
  • The cardboard manufacturers use locally recycled materials. They are located in the Cotentin and Loiret
  • The Normandy logistics provider uses permanent contracts (CDIs) for preparations, unlike precarious jobs that would not guarantee a sustainable situation for its employees.
POPEE: WIPE YOUR BOTTOM AS USUAL

Paper without harmful products

The problem with most everyday papers is that they contain chlorine, dyes, bleach, perfume,... These chemical substances cause skin fragility, which can eventually promote the appearance of fungal infections and hemorrhoids, especially in men. Most components of industrial perfumes are petrochemical: benzene, phthalates…

So far, we are in a good position to switch to recycled for our toilet paper rolls. But what about the health of our behinds? Is it dangerous to use office wastebasket papers to make sheets that come into contact with our most intimate parts?

The answer is no: Popee papers are guaranteed free of any skin toxicity, notably through the health safety of the Ecolabel. Moreover, the original raw material was white paper from companies, so there is no need to add lots of junk to achieve a finished product: the startup does not use chlorine, dyes, bleach, or perfume! No more endocrine disruptors!

A social commitment: Emmaüs

Popee also wants to give a broader meaning to its entrepreneurial activity born a year and a half ago. That’s why part of its margin is donated to Emmaüs, in the form of pallets of the brand’s toilet paper rolls. Local communities created by Abbé Pierre thus benefit from this quality everyday product, respectful of both bottoms and the planet!

Why Emmaüs? An undeniably growing problem in France is poverty. Unfortunately, cases number in the millions, especially since the crisis, and are now worsened by the pandemic. Beyond Emmaüs’ impact, Audrey, the founder of Popee, took the association’s values into account when making her choice. At Emmaüs, each community owes everyone a work time of forty to forty-five hours per week to help others. Fed, housed, and clothed, yes, but each contributing to helping one another. In other words, there is an undeniable presence of reciprocity and mutual benefit at Emmaüs, which is also found at Popee!

A friendly mascot and humor

Ecology and social issues are serious topics, so a little lightness doesn’t hurt to ease the mood! Here are some funny anecdotes:

  • Popee comes from popo and pipi, it’s pronounced “Popi”
  • The Popee logo is a chick because, according to Rabelais’ Gargantua, “there is no better butt-wiper than a fluffy gosling”!
Popee answers your questions

In short, we are fans of their brand that makes life easier for those who don’t take everyday small actions lightly. We especially love their tissue box. Discreet, it blends perfectly into our decor! What do you think of this pretty box within reach on our Pegboards?

Small actions, big impact We tell you! Slogan and humor from Popee to find on their social networks Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn.
