Décor Meeting #24: Studio Ammo and the Influence of Maritime Design

Rencontre Déco #24 : le Studio Ammo et l'influence du design maritime - Aire

Today we are going to meet the studio Ammo. Let’s discover the two people behind this design studio dedicated to exclusive pieces. Their inspiration draws strength from maritime design, Morbihan, and the sun. Thanks to Romain Pierrot and Justine Fournier for this conversation, and now let’s explore their journey.

A school overflowing with talent

Justine Fournier

Let’s start with Justine. She studied at the Condé school, beginning with a bachelor’s in product design. Then she continued with a master’s at ENSAAMA Olivier de Serres.

The Condé school

The Condé school is a leading school in design, illustration, photography, animation cinema, and heritage restoration. It’s The Place To Be for future designers. The school’s goal is to create the right conditions for the emergence of new talents. Feedback is positive and shows a great energy invested in new research projects. There is also a scholarship program for the most deserving students.

The connection between the designers did not happen at school as one might think. In fact, this meeting took place later, during a special event.

A meeting for a trophy

It was right after graduating from the Condé school that the two creators of studio Ammo met. It all happened during the competition organized by Maison du Monde. The competition theme was sustainable creation. Justine and Romain teamed up during the event for a joint proposal.

The goal of the Maison du Monde competition is to reward students and young designers by promoting eco-design. They reward students through four prizes:

  • The "furniture" prize: a check for €2,500, the opportunity to do an internship with the Maisons du Monde Designers teams, and the creation of the prototype as a reward.
  • The "Decoration and Home Linen" prize: a check for €2,500 and the opportunity to do an internship with the design team.
  • The special FSC prize: to promote certified furniture
  • The public “Like it” prize: all shortlisted projects will be presented on the Maisons du Monde FacebookThe project that receives the most “likes” will win a prize of €500 in Maisons du Monde gift vouchers.

The Bonnie and Clyde of design

Justine and Romain realized their complementarity during this contest. After talking with them, I realize how obvious their differences are. They have a very close way of working and find themselves in the maritime design.

Romain is much more focused on technique thanks to his engineering school background. He likes experimenting with new techniques. On the other hand, Justine is more conceptual. She prefers to use her imagination and pencil to create drawings. In their way of working, Justine draws and Romain checks if the project is feasible. They then start manufacturing if the project is realistic.

Their duo is aligned thanks to their shared references and inspirations. They like and admire the same things. This allows them to quickly get to the heart of the matter. There is a symbiosis between the manufacturing and the creative parts. Justine and Romain are a bit like the Bonnie and Clyde of design.

An inspiration in maritime design

Justine and Romain’s inspirations are clear. They come from several horizons. First of all, there is maritime design, the Morbihan, its landscape, the ocean, the coasts, and of course the vegetation. They love experimenting with new activities. This helps us better understand their passion for surfing. This sport allows them to discover new territories. It’s a way of traveling that is close to their hearts.

The Ammo duo loves discovering and trying new activities. It’s thanks to this that they create ever more amazing projects.

Maritime design

The design of the Ammo studio is defined as enthusiastic and gentle. Justine and Romain especially love lightness in curves. Their working method starts from elements drawn from their inspirations.

You can see at a glance in their work their oceanic mantraThe purity of their creations is visible no matter who looks at their work. I like to call it the maritime design. They don’t want to distort the thing that inspired them. They want their design to stay true to what they saw.

Their dreams

The Ammo studio overflowing with dreamsThey want to make them. They have a constant goal: to always think bigger. Justine and Romain shared one of their future projects with us: making paper lamps. The idea is to create an entire wall of paper lights. Nice, isn’t it?

Collaborations do not scare them. For them, it is an opportunity to grow, both technically and spiritually. Indeed, they already feed off each other daily. But their thirst for learning drives them to meet others. So why stop there?

A team effort

Studio Ammo is above all a team effort. It allows them to go faster and further. Indeed, exchange helps them move the project forward when one of them gets stuck. This brings another vision to the project and helps maximize their chances of successfully completing their projects.

This is especially felt in the manufacturing part. They thus gain the necessary perspective for the smooth running of the project. They can address more complex issues. This technical mastery is evident in their previous creations.

Noble French materials

Justine and Romain regularly advocate the use of noble French materials. For them, it is obvious. They thrive in their work thanks to this approach. They are fortunate to work with noble materials. They cultivate short supply chains to find partners.

This goes hand in hand with their conceptual and poetic projects. Their maritime design gains more meaning by using materials they love with greater added value.

Not to mention that this is also part of their personal values. They are therefore not among those who abuse the term “Made In France”.

Eco-friendly materials

Their personal values focus on their inspirations. Above all, they want to create exclusive designs that inspire. They are especially sensitive to global warming. It is therefore obvious for them to work with eco-friendly materials. They aim to highlight materials that have the least possible environmental impact whenever possible.

  • A short supply chain: to avoid greenhouse gas emissions and protect our environment.
  • Made in France: it is a unique know-how; when you buy locally, you support your country's economy and the French industry.

A studio in tune with its time

At Aire, we are sensitive to all the values of Studio Ammo and their maritime designEspecially when designers work on sensitive topics while cultivating an original aesthetic. Studio Ammo uses its audience and talent to convey messages that are important to us for an entire generation. We see a significant convergence in the design world with Ekhi BusquetYou have to dare to speak up when you have a strong voice. To expose yourself to defend the climate cause. This raises many questions. How can we produce while limiting our impact? What practices should we promote? We are happy to highlight young talents who are committed. We wish Studio Ammo a great adventure!
