Decor Meeting #11: Aurélie Malau Part 2, Organization Serving Decoration

Rencontré Déco #11 : Aurélie Malau partie 2, l'organisation au service de la déco - Aire

Aire continues its Home tour with Aurélie. Here is the second part of her interview. Let’s explore her home in detail. How did she come up with her ideas? How does she organize herself?

What is your storage system? Do you have a way of organizing yourself?

We created storage solutions that adapt to each person’s needs. We really worked so our daughters could have space in their rooms and host friends. We ask for a certain discipline in tidying. Everything is set up so they can put their things away properly. It’s true that the little one takes out a large number of toys. But tidying is really simple, so it’s not a chore.

School bags often get left lying around when they come home from school. We ask that everything be put away after homework is done. Everything must be in its place. They have a place to store their bags and a shelf to store their notebooks and books. When it’s suitable, it’s definitely easier. We tend to leave everything lying around when we don’t have storage.

The girls are completely free to manage their own tidying. as they wish in their rooms. The little one can keep toys for weeks. It’s her space. But she has to tidy up once she’s done playing. We want the rooms to be clean. We organized everything together. We bought boxes for the toys where we wrote what they contained. They now enjoy tidying up because they know where everything goes.

I know folding t-shirts isn’t easy for children. We give them tips to make it simpler for them. Some things are hung up. Other things we store in the way of Marie Kondo.

Where do you look for your ideas and inspirations?

I worked in clothing stores for a very long time. I think my inspirations partly come from there. We are used to tidying, folding, and optimizing our space. I also got inspired by Marie Kondo's folding method.. We try to adapt storage systems for the children. They can't organize like I do. It shouldn't be complicated. They like everything to be tidy when friends come over. They like to have space.

When it's feasible, We try to improve and find suitable solutions.. I know my eldest daughter wanted a vanity corner. She has a large dressing room. We made it inside there. We try to make their lives easier. We listen to their needs.

What advice would you give to someone who can't find inspiration?

When buying, the house has to be pretty, but You also need to identify the necessary storage.. Sometimes interiors are difficult to arrange and organize.

I advise not to stop at just a YouTube video, a press article, or a Pinterest pin. Sometimes it can take weeks of searching. You reach a point where you think it can work. You shouldn't rush. We moved in August. We just finished our bedroom. So, it took us 9 months. We have time. Of course, we are missing some storage.

We are not very organized, for now. You have to believe it will work out. Taking the time allowed us to optimize the space and do it as best as possible. There are always things that are adjustable. You have to remember that what you see in others' homes isn't necessarily adaptable to your own.. But there are always solutions

Is there a space in your home that you still dislike? If yes, why?

No. We really thought about a lot of things. The only thing I would change is the laundry room. I would like to add 15m2. It's not a matter of layout. The rooms in our home are well distributed. It's not the size that matters. You have to assign volumes in each room from the start of the project. When some people build their house, they allocate more space to the master bedroom. We wanted the girls’ rooms to be bigger than ours. We only use our bedroom for sleeping. The girls have their friends over in their rooms. They have toys. You have to think carefully about the volumes. You shouldn’t say “I’m going to make a large 30 m2 kitchen and a 30 m2 living room” when you rarely cook. If we want to get organized, we need to think carefully about exactly where we want to place these volumes.

You have to plan ahead. You should install built-in furniture whenever possible. This avoids having extra furniture. It saves space. We asked the architect for a space where we could put shelves.

What is the most important thing in terms of decoration for you?

It’s important to get good inspiration from others. But You have to do it according to your lifestyle. You need to understand your desires and needs. Ideally, you should regularly sort through your belongings. You won’t be overwhelmed by things you no longer use. This helps you organize better and feel better at home.

In your opinion, what should be avoided in terms of storage?

You should avoid keeping everything. That’s the worst when it comes to storage. You should also avoid buying furniture just because it looks nice. You should buy furniture because it suits your needs. It’s better to buy a large TV cabinet rather than a small one. It offers more storage. You should also opt for two-in-one furniture. Modularity opens up interesting possibilities. Furniture becomes more durable this way. We can always find a new function for it in the future.

What is the most important thing in terms of decoration for you?

Some people like living in organized chaos. I find that tidying up helps you live better at home. I tend to get irritated more easily when the house is messy. When the house is tidy, you relax. You feel better.
